The four principal Mahanayake Theras of Sri Lanka's Buddhist chapters have formally opposed a proposed constitutional amendment to extend judges' retirement age, according to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
The Mahanayake Theras representing the Malwathu, Asgiriya, Amarapura and Ramanna Buddhist chapters have submitted written objections to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake regarding a proposed constitutional amendment that would extend the retirement age for judges, Bar Association of Sri Lanka President Rajeev Amarasuriya disclosed on Monday.
Amarasuriya, speaking to media following a meeting with the Mahanayake Thera of the Malwathu Chapter, stated that the Chief Prelates have conveyed their formal position to the President in correspondence. The Buddhist leaders characterised the amendment proposal as inappropriate, according to Amarasuriya's account.
The BASL President expressed strong views on the matter, stating that he believes the government lacks the moral authority to advance with this constitutional change. Amarasuriya's comments suggest significant institutional opposition to the amendment from both religious leadership and the legal community.
