Prison authorities have transferred 104 inmates suspected of involvement in unrest at Mahara Prison to seven other facilities, while assuring the safety of remaining detainees.
Following unrest at Mahara Prison on November 1st, authorities have implemented security measures and transferred a significant number of detainees. Prison Superintendent Rohana Galappaththi stated that the safety of inmates currently held at the facility has been fully ensured and urged families not to worry about their wellbeing.
The 104 transferred inmates are suspected of involvement in the incident that prompted the transfers. These detainees have been distributed across seven other prisons as part of the response to the disturbance. The Superintendent confirmed that a list of transferred inmates has been made available to the public at the facility's entrance.
Family visits to Mahara Prison have been suspended temporarily as a precautionary measure. According to prison authorities, visiting privileges will remain suspended until the following Thursday. The Superintendent emphasised that necessary security protocols have been activated to maintain order and ensure the protection of all remaining inmates at the facility.
