A prolonged disturbance at Mahara Prison has caused extensive damage exceeding Rs. 150 million, with multiple prison structures and equipment sustaining harm during the incident.
Unrest at Mahara Prison yesterday resulted in damage estimated at more than Rs. 150 million, according to the Department of Prisons. The disturbance lasted approximately 13 hours, during which time inmates allegedly hurled stones from within the prison compound until after midnight.
Multiple structures within the facility were severely damaged in the incident. Prison buildings sustained extensive harm, including destruction of roof tiles and structural damage. Vocational rehabilitation equipment, particularly items related to sewing programmes, was also affected during the unrest.
The impact of the disturbance extended beyond the prison walls, as stone attacks from the compound damaged several residential properties in the surrounding area. The Department of Prisons indicated that an investigation is underway to establish the underlying causes of the incident and the circumstances that led to the prolonged unrest.
