Authorities have brought under control a disturbance at Mahara Prison that resulted in one inmate death and extensive property damage. Police curfews remain in effect in surrounding areas.
An outbreak of unrest at Mahara Prison has been contained after security forces intervened to restore order, according to statements from police and prison authorities. The incident began on the evening of August 1st following a dispute between inmates and prison officers. One inmate died and six others sustained injuries during the clash, with the injured receiving treatment at Ragama Teaching Hospital.
The causes of the unrest remain unclear, with authorities still investigating the incident. Police suspect a group of drug-addicted inmates may have been involved, while prison officials report that inmates attempted to breach sections of the prison by attacking a temporary barrier around a proposed administrative building and damaging the main gate. The disturbance continued into the following morning before being brought under control.
To restore order, authorities deployed multiple security forces including the Police Special Task Force, Sri Lanka Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel. An Air Force helicopter and drones were also deployed for aerial monitoring. The operation was conducted jointly by prison officials, police, and military personnel. As a result of the unrest, extensive damage was reported to prison infrastructure, including the kitchen, rehabilitation building, administrative office, prison hospital, and vocational training facilities.
Following the incident, police imposed curfews in three Grama Niladhari divisions in the Mahara area—246 Kendaliyadda Road West, 246 C Kendaliyadda Road North, and 181 G Dambuwa—to maintain public order. Relatives of inmates who gathered outside the prison were initially denied entry, and tensions arose between family members and security personnel before the situation was brought under control. Prison authorities have assured relatives that security has been reinforced and that no immediate decisions have been made regarding inmate transfers.
