The Colombo High Court has ordered the Attorney General to take up the case filed against former ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Nalin Fernando, who have been sentenced to prison in connection with the carrom board incident, on July 23. The case was scheduled to be taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Buddhika C. Ragala today. However, as Judge Buddhika C. Ragala was on leave today, the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Udesh Ranatunga today. Having considered the facts presented, the judge ordered that the case be taken up for a pre-trial conference on July 23. When the case was taken up today, former ministers Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Nalin Fernando, who are named as defendants in the case, were produced before the court by prison officials. The Attorney General has filed this case against the two defendants under the Public Property Act, alleging that they caused a loss of Rs. 39 million to the government by distributing 14,000 carrom boards and 11,000 tarpaulins to the political offices of then presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa during the 2015 presidential election.
