A 29-year-old man from Thannekumbura has been arrested after attempting to bribe police officers at Teldeniya Police Station with Rs. 500,000 to secure the release of a drug trafficking suspect.
A 29-year-old resident of Thannekumbura in Kandy district has been taken into custody following an attempted bribery incident at Teldeniya Police Station. According to police, the man offered 100 notes of Rs. 5,000 each to the Officer-in-Charge in an effort to prevent a drug suspect from appearing in court.
The bribery attempt emerged during the investigation of a drug trafficking case. On July 31, police arrested an individual with 2.385 grams of ICE narcotics, leading to a detention order from the Teldeniya Magistrate's Court. Information provided by this suspect led authorities to apprehend a second individual in Thannekumbura, who was found with 10.795 grams of ICE.
The bribe offer occurred as authorities prepared to produce the second suspect before the court. Police said the Officer-in-Charge acted quickly with support from other officers to apprehend the man during the attempted transaction. The Rs. 500,000 in cash has been seized and placed in police custody.
Investigations are proceeding under the Bribery Act, with the case having been referred to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption for further legal proceedings.
