A person, shot and wounded by police in Piliyandala in the early hours of yesterday, is receiving treatment at the Kalubowila Hospital. Police identified him as a 24-year-old resident of Weediyagoda, Bandaragama. Police, engaged in routine checking of people moving along the Weerasinghe Mawatha, Bokundara, opened fire after one of the two individuals, on a motorcycle, attacked them with a sword. The other individual fled the scene, and police have launched investigations to apprehend the suspect. Police said that law enforcement personnel confronted them as they were fleeing, after attacking a house at O.P. Perera Mawatha, Boralesgamuwa, around 1.30 am. Police believe they are members of a gang operating in the area and one of them could be apprehended due to the timely intervention of the Boralesgamuwa Police.
News CAA urged to protect soap users

The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection has called on the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to make it mandatory for manufacturers to disclose all ingredients used in soap production on product packaging. Issuing a media statement, the organisation’s President, Ranjith Vithanage, has urged the CAA to issue a Gazette notification requiring soap manufacturers to clearly list all ingredients on soap wrappers and packaging, arguing that consumers have a right to know the contents of products they use. The consumer rights body welcomed the CAA’s recent decision to introduce regulations requiring soap manu-facturers to display the product name and Total Fatty Matter (TFM) value on packaging before releasing products to the market. Vithanage said the move represented a positive step towards enhancing transparency and protecting consumer interests. However, he stressed that information on ingredients was equally important and should be made available to consumers at the point of purchase. “The disclosure of ingredients would enable consumers to make informed choices and better understand the composition of the products they use,” the statement said. The Organisation urged the CAA to take further regulatory action by making ingredient labelling a compulsory requirement for all soap products sold in the country. The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection maintained that greater transparency in product labelling would strengthen consumer rights and improve accountability within the personal care products industry.
News Three hand grenades, sword found at ASP’s residence

A special police team from Kandy detected three live hand grenades and a sword from the residence of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), in the Naththaranpotha area, in Kandy, on Friday. The search was conducted by police officers, based on information provided by a woman to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), in charge of the Kandy Division. During the inspection of the house, the explosives and the sword were found inside a cupboard in one of the bedrooms. The recovered items have been handed over to the Pallekele Police for further investigations. Under the supervision of the Kandy Division SSP, the Kandy Division Criminal Investigation Bureau, and the Pallekele Police, are conducting ongoing inquiries into the incident. By S.K. Samaranayake
News Tenth volume of ‘NEETHAM’ Law Journal of the University of Jaffna launched

The 10th volume of the ‘NEETHAM’ law journal, published annually by the Department of Law and the Law Students’ Union of the University of Jaffna, was launched at the Medical Faculty Auditorium of the university under the patronage of Supreme Court Judge Sampath Abeykoon. The event was held with the participation of Court of Appeal Judge Sashi Mahendran, Deputy Solicitor General of the Attorney General’s Department Suharsha Herath, Additional Editor of the Attorney General’s Department Gunapala, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Jaffna Nagadeepa Pradeepa, as well as several judges and lawyers from the Jaffna courts. Yasara Pitawala served as the editor for the 10th volume of the ‘NEETHAM’ law journal, which was successfully completed under the guidance and instructions of the Head of the Department of Law, Kosalai Mathan, with the participation of many law students from the University of Jaffna. A notable feature of this volume was the opportunity provided for law students from other universities to include their research papers in the 10th volume of ‘NEETHAM’. The 10th volume of ‘NEETHAM’ was digitized and launched on the web by the chief guest, Supreme Court Judge Sampath Abeykoon, making it accessible online from any university in the future. In his address, Supreme Court Judge Sampath Abeykoon noted that all court proceedings are currently being digitized, which will make court activities more efficient and convenient.
