Tamil Progressive Alliance MP Mano Ganesan has questioned the consistency of police enforcement after the arrest and subsequent bail of SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam over alleged threatening remarks about the Inspector General of Police.
Tamil Progressive Alliance leader Mano Ganesan has raised concerns about what he characterizes as unequal application of the law, citing the recent arrest and bail of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam. Kariyawasam was taken into custody, brought before the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court, and subsequently released on bail after police alleged that his remarks regarding Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya constituted a death threat.
Ganesan contended on social media that the remarks in question should be protected as free speech and that the matter ought to be resolved through court proceedings. He argued that the upcoming verdict from the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court would clarify the legal standing of such speech.
The opposition MP challenged the police's impartiality, pointing out that other government politicians have made public statements about using violence to remain in power without facing similar legal action. Ganesan specifically referenced claims that certain officials had declared they would "massacre hundreds of thousands," yet questioned whether police had investigated or acted on these statements with the same vigor.
Ganesan emphasized that consistent application of the law is fundamental to justice, asserting that freedom of speech protections cannot be extended selectively based on political affiliation. He stressed that maintaining equality before the law requires uniform enforcement standards across all individuals and political groups.
