The first phase of the newly established Cardiovascular Surgery Unit at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital was inaugurated for public use today (18) under the leadership of the Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. The new Cardiology Unit building of Batticaloa Teaching Hospital has been constructed at a cost of 324 million rupees and has 05 floors. The Cardiology Unit building, which has an area of 4,328 square meters, houses X-ray and ECG testing units on the ground floor. There is a Cath Lab and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) on the first floor. The second floor houses operating rooms and a Surgical and Special Intensive Care Unit (SICU). There are also 80-bed wards on the third and fourth floors.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Health stated that modernized cardiac treatments will be provided at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and that steps will be taken to construct a new MRI unit and a new building complex for the hospital within three months. The Minister stated that steps will be taken to submit the necessary funds in the budget to undertake many more development projects in the future and obtain financial allocation.
The Director of the Teaching Hospital, Dr. Kalaranjini Ganesalingam, medical experts, high-ranking officials, and sectoral experts participated in this event.
It is noteworthy that the Minister of Health and Media has undertaken several health development projects to provide better and more efficient health services to the people of Batticaloa District.
