Water supply disruptions have affected multiple areas in the Mawanella region following heavy rainfall that blocked intake points at key treatment facilities, according to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.
Heavy rainfall has caused significant disruptions to the water supply serving the Mawanella and Aranayaka regions, with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) identifying blocked intake points as the primary cause. The obstruction of water intake locations has compromised the normal operations of both the Asupini Ella and Mawanella water treatment plants, preventing them from functioning at standard capacity.
The impact varies across the affected areas. Water supply has been completely suspended in the Mawanella and Aranayaka Divisional Secretariat divisions, leaving residents in these zones without access to piped water. In contrast, areas stretching from Mawanella to Karandana Junction and along the Mawanella–Rambukkana road are experiencing reduced water pressure rather than a complete outage.
The NWSDB has indicated that restoration efforts will commence once weather conditions become more favorable. The board's priority is to clear the blocked intake points and restore the treatment plants to normal operational status, with the goal of resuming regular water supply across all affected divisions as quickly as circumstances allow.
