Court proceedings have revealed that former Minister Mervyn Silva accumulated assets worth over Rs. 600 million during a two-year period while serving as Minister of Labour and Public Relations, according to state media reports.

A case investigating unexplained assets allegedly acquired by former Minister Mervyn Silva is set for hearing before Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail on August 20. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has filed the case, which focuses on a two-year period between March 31, 2010 and March 31, 2012, during which Silva held ministerial office.

According to state-run Dinamina newspaper, court documents detail substantial financial holdings attributed to Silva and his family members. These include fixed deposits exceeding Rs. 182 million held at a single bank, multiple properties located in Colombo and Rajagiriya, seven vehicles purchased within the specified timeframe, insurance policies, and various other financial investments. The prosecution has indicated it will seek to demonstrate how Silva accumulated approximately Rs. 485 million in wealth that cannot be explained through legitimate income sources.

The upcoming hearing is expected to include testimony from managers of several financial institutions who will provide evidence regarding multiple bank accounts maintained by the former minister. Assistant Director Ama Wijesinghe of CIABOC is prosecuting the case. The court has already been informed of the scope of assets under investigation as part of the preliminary proceedings.
