Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology has warned of dangerous swell waves along a significant stretch of the country's coastline, with an Amber advisory in effect until Wednesday evening.
The Department of Meteorology issued an Amber-level advisory on Tuesday evening for heightened wave conditions affecting multiple coastal regions. The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre released the alert at 5:30 p.m., with validity extending through 5:30 p.m. on August 20.
The warning encompasses sea areas stretching from Puttalam to Pottuvil, passing through Galle, Matara, and Hambantota. Within this zone, swell waves are expected to reach heights between 2.5 and 3 metres. The department clarified that these measurements apply specifically to open sea areas rather than onshore locations.
Additionally, the meteorological agency flagged near-shore sea areas between Beruwala and Matara via Galle as vulnerable to wave surges generated by the swell. This secondary alert indicates potentially hazardous conditions in shallow waters and coastal zones.
The department has advised naval personnel and fishing communities operating in the affected areas to exercise heightened caution during the alert period. Such advisories typically guide operational decisions for maritime activities and inform public safety measures in vulnerable coastal communities.
