Sri Lanka's meteorological authorities have warned of potentially dangerous swell waves along the southern coast, urging maritime and coastal communities to exercise caution.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a high wave advisory affecting sea areas along Sri Lanka's southern coast from Colombo to Pottuvil, passing through Galle, Matara, and Hambantota. The advisory, issued on 26 August and valid until 3:30 p.m. on 27 August, warns of swell waves reaching heights between 2.0 and 3.0 metres in the affected offshore zones.
According to the alert, nearshore sea areas stretching from Beruwala to Matara via Galle face particular risk of experiencing wave surges. The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has advised all naval and fishing communities operating in these waters to remain alert and take necessary precautions during the advisory period.
Coastal residents living in the nearshore areas identified in the advisory have also been instructed to stay vigilant. The warnings are specifically directed at maritime activities and do not apply to land areas, according to the meteorological department's clarification.
