Sri Lanka's capital is set to introduce a new Metro bus service starting in September, featuring colour-coded routes designed to improve urban mobility and reduce private vehicle congestion.
Colombo will soon welcome a restructured public transport system with the launch of a Metro bus service scheduled for September. The initiative aims to provide commuters with a more reliable and convenient travel option while simultaneously reducing the volume of private vehicles navigating the city's congested streets.
The new service will operate across six distinct routes, each identified by a colour-coded system for easy passenger recognition. These routes span from outlying areas to the city centre, with destinations including Makumbura, Kadawatha, Battaramulla, and Kesbewa, all converging on key hubs such as Pettah. Route CM 06 will operate as a circular service within Kollupitiya, offering convenient local connectivity.
To support the expansion, authorities plan to implement a digital management system that will coordinate bus operations and driver activities, ensuring services adhere to scheduled timetables. Officials believe this technological infrastructure will enhance the overall reliability and predictability of the public transport network, encouraging greater ridership among commuters who currently depend on private vehicles or informal transport options.
