Sri Lanka has received over $5 billion in remittances from migrant workers during the first seven months of 2026, marking a significant increase compared to the same period last year.
Remittance inflows to Sri Lanka have surpassed the $5 billion mark in the January-to-July period of 2026, according to official figures. This represents a notable rise from the $4.44 billion received during the corresponding seven-month stretch in 2025, reflecting an ongoing recovery in overseas worker contributions to the national economy.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Ranasinghe, expressed optimism about the trajectory of remittance flows while addressing a gathering of professionals in Passara. He projected that total remittances for the full year 2026 could reach $10 billion, suggesting that the strengthening trend observed in the first half of the year may continue through the remainder of the period.
Remittances from migrant workers have become an increasingly important source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka. The substantial growth compared to the previous year's figures indicates improving economic conditions for Sri Lankan diaspora communities or potentially increased worker migration to overseas employment opportunities.
