Seven more storage structures have been brought to Sri Lanka under the battery energy storage system initiated by the government to stabilize the electricity supply and provide relief to consumers. These seven energy storage structures will be installed near the electricity transmission substations in Panadura, Beliatta, Hambantota, Ampara, Vavuniya, Valachchenai and Mahiyanganaya. The Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation has announced that these seven battery energy storage structures will be able to store 280 megawatts (MW) of electricity and will be able to supply 70 megawatts of electricity daily to the national electricity grid. Under this scheme, work is currently underway to install the eight structures that were brought in early June near the selected substations. The work will be completed by the end of July, thereby providing 80 megawatts of electricity to the national electricity grid. The responsibility for controlling and managing the storage systems will be entrusted to the National System Operator, a private company owned by the Ministry of Energy, and maintenance work will be carried out by the relevant companies.
