Sri Lanka's Fisheries Minister has committed to implementing swift measures to address piracy targeting deep-sea fishermen, while announcing plans to develop infrastructure at Oluvil Port.

Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar has pledged to take practical and expedited steps to address piracy that threatens fishermen engaged in deep-sea operations. The commitment was made during a meeting of the Ampara District Fisheries Coordinating Committee, where representatives from fisheries associations raised concerns about maritime security challenges.

Fisheries stakeholders called upon the Minister to establish both immediate and long-term mechanisms to eliminate piracy activities. The representations underscore the severity of the threat to fishing communities and the need for coordinated action to ensure safer operations at sea.

Beyond security concerns, the Minister outlined development plans for Oluvil Port, indicating that the facility will be expanded with participation from both domestic and international investors. According to the Minister, there is growing investor interest in utilizing the port for commercial ventures, suggesting potential economic benefits through infrastructure enhancement in the region.
