The Motor Traffic Department has announced a mandatory scheme to issue green-background license plates for all electric vehicles in Sri Lanka, while other vehicles will continue to receive white and yellow plates.

The Motor Traffic Department of Sri Lanka has initiated measures to distribute green-background license plates exclusively for electric vehicles, according to announcements by the department's Commissioner, retired Air Vice Marshal Dushara Bernando.

According to the department, approximately 8,000 green license plates have been printed to date. The initiative follows a decision made by the Ministry of Transport. The plates have been sent for gazette publication, and the Police Commissioner has been notified to inform all police stations that these plates are legally valid, Bernando stated.

In a broader vehicle registration update, the Motor Traffic Department reported that manufacturing of new license plates for 88,740 registered vehicles has been completed. This includes 56,233 plates for vehicles registered between 10 June 2026 and 31 August 2026, as well as 32,507 plates for vehicles registered during 2023 and 2024. Vehicle owners can collect their new plates from the Motor Traffic Department office in Narahenpita. Other vehicles will continue to receive white and yellow-background license plates under the new classification system.
