An approximately 4-tonne upper stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has collided with the Moon after months adrift in space. NASA and international scientists confirm the impact poses no threat to Earth.
A discarded upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has struck the lunar surface, concluding an uncontrolled journey that scientists worldwide had monitored since identifying its Moon-bound trajectory. The rocket component, weighing roughly 4,000 kilograms, impacted with force equivalent to approximately three tons of TNT, according to international reports. Ground-based observatories in the United States tracked the event, and lunar orbit spacecraft are expected to capture imagery of the resulting crater in coming days.
The rocket stage originated from a January 2025 Falcon 9 launch tasked with delivering a lunar lander to the Moon. Unlike typical SpaceX missions where upper stages re-enter Earth's atmosphere, this lunar delivery required additional propulsive force, which left the stage stranded in deep space after its designated task was completed. Having depleted its fuel reserves, the component lacked the capacity to perform corrective manoeuvres to avoid lunar impact once astronomers identified the collision course earlier this year.
Amateur astronomers monitoring the Moon through telescopes reported observing no visible flash from the collision, despite some scientists having suggested a faint flash might be detectable from Earth. NASA and other space agencies have stated definitively that the impact presents no danger to Earth or its inhabitants, with effects confined entirely to the lunar environment.
Scientists view the collision as providing valuable data for understanding how impacts affect the lunar surface, information potentially useful for assessing hazards to future lunar missions. The incident has also highlighted growing concerns about space debris in Earth's orbital environment, where millions of objects—ranging from large rocket components to microscopic fragments—travel at extreme velocities.
