Colombo (News 1st) The Police have issued a special guideline to protect against fraud and unknown strangers. The Police Headquarters stated that in the past, incidents of women being cheated, sexually abused and robbed of their properties have been reported from various parts of the country through different communication systems including social media. The Police stated that unfortunate incidents such as offering various types of food and drinks to make them unconscious and robbing women of their properties, defrauding them of money and properties on false promises of marriage and committing murder have also been observed. The statement issued by the Police Media Division stated that information about those under threat is being collected through all police stations, public safety teams, intelligence and civil authorities across the country and that police officers have been instructed to protect them. The police have advised people not to trust them and not to give them money, gold or other valuables while interacting. The police have also urged people not to share important pictures and videos with unknown and suspicious people. The police have advised people to reject any requests for transactions or meetings made through suspicious phone calls or text messages. If they or anyone they know has been subjected to such incidents or fraud, they should immediately report it to the nearest police station or the Child Affairs and Women's Bureau, the police media unit said in a statement. Such incidents can be reported by calling the hotlines 118, 119, 107, 109. The police advise the public to continue to be vigilant in order to ensure their safety and dignity from those involved in such fraud.
