Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding and landslides across seven districts, displacing thousands of people and claiming at least six lives, according to the Ministry of Defence.
More than 6,100 individuals from approximately 1,512 families have been impacted by weather-related disasters following severe rainfall in multiple regions across Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Defence reported. The affected population is distributed across 47 Divisional Secretariat divisions spanning seven districts throughout the country.
In response to the crisis, authorities have established 16 temporary shelters to house displaced persons, with 3,316 individuals relocated to these safe locations. The natural disasters have claimed six lives thus far, while search efforts continue for one missing person.
Emergency response operations are underway as the Sri Lanka Navy deployed 11 dedicated rescue teams equipped with boats to assist affected communities. These teams are working to provide emergency aid and conduct rescue operations in the hardest-hit areas as weather conditions persist.
