Police have arrested a 37-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man in connection with the abandonment of a four-year-old girl found by a roadside in the Wattegama area.
Authorities have made two arrests following an investigation into the abandonment of a young child in Sri Lanka's Central Province. The four-year-old girl was discovered abandoned near a roadside in the Mudunegammedda locality of Wattegama, prompting police action that culminated in the apprehension of two suspects.
The Hali-Ela Police department conducted the arrests while the suspects were en route to a relative's home in the Mawalagoda area. According to law enforcement, the detained woman, aged 37, is the child's biological mother, while the man arrested alongside her, aged 28, is believed to be her partner. Both individuals were intercepted along Kithalella Road during their journey.
The case has drawn public attention due to the circumstances surrounding the young child's discovery. Following the arrests, authorities indicated that the suspects would be transferred to the Wattegama Police station, where they will face further questioning and legal proceedings related to the abandonment charges.
