Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Chaminda Wijesiri has launched an appeal challenging his recent conviction in the Badulla High Court. In addition to seeking acquittal, the lawmaker's legal team has requested bail while the appeal is processed and has asked the High Court to refer the matter to the Court of Appeal.
The Badulla High Court convicted and sentenced Wijesiri on Tuesday after finding him guilty of multiple charges including unlawful obstruction of a public road, assaulting two police officers, causing them bodily injury, and making death threats. According to prosecutors, the incident originated in 2019 when a disagreement erupted following a police jeep overtaking the MP's vehicle. The confrontation allegedly escalated into physical assault and threats directed at officers.
President's Counsel Anuja Premaratne and an associated legal team submitted the appeal on Wijesiri's behalf. The case represents a significant legal challenge for the opposition parliamentarian as he seeks to overturn the conviction through the appellate process.
