Elon Musk's SpaceX has announced plans to build its largest launch site in Louisiana, a $100 billion project expected to begin construction next year and create thousands of jobs in the region.
SpaceX has revealed plans for an expansive new rocket launch facility in Louisiana, marking a significant expansion of the company's infrastructure beyond its existing operations in Texas and Florida. The project, to be called Starbase Louisiana, will occupy 125,000 acres and serve as the company's primary hub for increased Starship launch operations. SpaceX stated the facility will support thousands of Starship flights annually, with missions targeting Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Construction of the $100 billion complex is scheduled to commence in 2025, with SpaceX targeting its first Starship launch from the Louisiana site in 2029. The company has described the facility as the world's largest of its kind, designed to substantially increase launch frequency and expand access to space operations. According to SpaceX's announcement on Tuesday, the facility will generate more than 3,000 direct jobs in Louisiana.
Local economic development officials project broader employment benefits from the project. The Louisiana Economic Development agency estimates the facility will create an additional 8,100 indirect jobs in the region. Workers at the base are expected to earn salaries approximately 192 percent higher than the current regional average, according to the agency's analysis. Officials characterized the project as a transformative opportunity to establish Louisiana as a global aerospace hub.
The Louisiana facility announcement comes following SpaceX's June initial public offering on the Nasdaq, the largest stock market debut in history. The newly-public company faces investor expectations regarding profitability amid its expansion initiatives. SpaceX's share value has declined more than 30 percent from post-listing highs, though remains above the initial $135 offer price.
