The Police Headquarters has announced that 214,333 suspects have been arrested so far under the 'Entire Nation Together' special national operation being carried out by the government with the aim of completely eradicating the drug trafficking and distribution network in Sri Lanka.
From the day this national operation was launched until Thursday, 215,526 special raids have been successfully carried out throughout the country with the participation of the tri-services and the Special Task Force. The above-mentioned large number of suspects have been netted during these raids.
Out of the total number of suspects arrested, formal 'preventing orders' have been obtained through the courts against 3,112 major criminals linked to large-scale drug traffickers and international networks and intensive investigations have been initiated. Meanwhile, special investigations have been initiated by the Illicit Assets Investigation Division (IAD) regarding the movable and immovable properties of 360 key points found to have illegally acquired assets including luxury vehicles, lands and houses through the drug trade. Police Headquarters announced that 2,188 people who were identified during these raids as being seriously addicted to drugs and involved in criminal activities have been sent to appropriate rehabilitation treatment centers based on court orders with a view to their rehabilitation. During the nationwide sweeps carried out under this national program, the largest drug seizures in Sri Lanka's history have been made. Accordingly, a large quantity of drugs including approximately 1,964 kilograms of heroin, 2,120 kilograms of ice, 289 kilograms of cocaine, 5,818 kilograms of cannabis, 479 kilograms of kush and 312 kilograms of hashish have been seized. The Police Media Division has indicated that this 'Whole Nation Together' special operation, which is being carried out by the Police Department under the direct guidance of the Ministry of Defense, will continue with greater intensity in the coming days without any political interference, in order to protect the future generations of Sri Lanka from the drug menace.
