The number of deaths reported so far this year due to the deadly dengue fever has increased to 30. As confirmed by the health department, the total number of dengue patients reported islandwide has reached around 49,000. Health officials point out that the number of patients is currently spreading rapidly in 14 districts of the country. The Government Medical Officers Association has emphasized that more than 25,000 of the total patients have been reported in the Western Province. With a week left to end this month, the number of patients reported so far this month has approached 15,000. Due to the rapid increase in the number of patients, several major hospitals including the Angoda Epidemic Hospital, the Colombo National Hospital, Kalubowila and Gampaha have now reached their maximum capacity. Due to this, the Government Medical Officers Association has warned that there is a serious risk that the current situation will spiral out of control and dengue will become a serious epidemic situation in the country.
