Construction work has begun on 2,500 houses to resettle families displaced by war in the North and East.

There is no place for racism in any form or place in the North, South or East.

The housing problems of all people displaced by war will be resolved during our term in office.

A plan to develop Jaffna and economically uplift those people has been implemented

- President

The housing allowance from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 2 million has been increased, creating an environment where a better house can be built

- Jaffna District Member of Parliament K. Ilangumaran

Even today, while some people try to incite ethnic conflicts here and there, focusing on archaeological monuments or religious sites, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stressed that racism will not be allowed to rise again in the North, South, East or anywhere else.

The President also stressed that the housing problems of all people displaced by the war will be resolved during his term in office.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake made this statement while participating in the inauguration ceremony of the “A Place of Our Own - A Beautiful Life' National Housing Scheme 2026”

which will construct houses for 31,218 families across the country, including the construction of 2,500 houses for the resettlement of families displaced by the war, held at the Weerasingham Primary School grounds in Chavakachcheri, Meesalai this morning (16).

Under the first phase of the project to provide Rs. 2 million for the construction of houses for 800 families displaced by the war in the Jaffna district, cheques of Rs. 300,000 each were presented by the Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekhar and members of Parliament.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who addressed the event, further stated that the government has implemented a plan to improve the lives of the people by comprehensively developing the Northern Province.

Pointing out that the Jaffna district has beautiful beaches and many attractive places that can enhance the tourism industry, the President stated that work will be carried out to reconstruct the Palaly Airport and steps will be taken to immediately commence the Kankesanthurai Port works, and that the Indian Government has agreed to provide financial assistance of $ 60 million for this purpose.

The President pointed out that for the first time, a government has been formed in the country in which the people of Jaffna have placed their trust, and called on everyone to unite their hearts and unite to create a country where children can live in peace and harmony, saying that that trust will not be broken even a little.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake further commented,

A large number of houses were damaged by the war in particular. Even after a long time, those houses have not been fully constructed and completed. Many people living in the Jaffna district were displaced during the war. They were displaced after the war as well. It is not fair for them to live without a house or a place of their own for a long time. Our expectation is that we will resolve the housing problem of all the people displaced by the war during our tenure.

The people of this region contributed to the formation of our government with great expectations. For a long time, there was a stance that was against and disagreed with the ruling party. There is nothing wrong with that. If the government does not think about the public, such as feeding racism or stealing people's property, or if the government thinks only about itself, then it will not be possible to prevent the government and the people from becoming distant.

Because they are governments that create contradictions against the people. They were governments that only thought about themselves and their families.

But for the first time in the history of Sri Lanka, a government of the people of the country was formed. During the election period, there would have been confusion and uncertainty about us in the minds of the people, especially among the people of the north. Even if they voted for us to come to power, they would have voted with doubts.

A little over a year has passed since our government was formed. A government that you from Jaffna can trust has been formed for the first time.

First, we must solve the problems of the people at the grassroots level. As a government, we will do everything we can. We will take steps to provide housing for the homeless. We must provide better education for children. We have allocated the largest amount in history for that.

We must create a better income source for the people. Especially agriculture, coconut cultivation, fishing and small industries are the livelihood of the people of this region. The government's expectation is to support all those industries and improve the living standards of the people to a higher level than they are. This is a government that is striving for that.

That alone is not enough for us. For a long time, we spent a large part of our lives with war. We lived in the midst of conflicts. We lived with suspicion. We lived with hostility. Sinhala communal groups looked at the Tamil people with suspicion. Tamil communal groups looked at the Sinhala people with suspicion. Conflicts continued for a long time. No one benefited from that conflict. There was nothing left from that conflict.

All that was gained were families who lost their homes, children who lost their parents, and a complete collapse in the economy. We had to lose relatives. People from both the North and the South were affected by this destruction. Behind this entire destruction was politics. They have incited the Sinhalese people to gain power. They have incited the Tamil people to gain power. This kind of communal politics was seen earlier. That situation is still there today.

They are trying to incite these communal conflicts by presenting an archaeological issue or citing a religious site. Again, I give you an assurance that we will not allow any communalism in our country, whether in the North, South, East or any part of the country, whether Sinhalese, Tamil or Muslim. We all need a country where we live in brotherhood and unity. Similarly, we need a life full of entertainment, happiness and good material conditions.

We are planning to build a huge playground in Jaffna. Some problems have arisen in it. I discussed with the District Secretary yesterday how to resolve it. We are going to complete the work for that quickly within this year. We need to give children the opportunity to play, to express their happiness, to live a life of fun.

We planned to build an indoor playground in Jaffna district. But a lawsuit was filed through politicians. It is necessary for the children of Jaffna. But politicians are filing lawsuits. That is, they are doing politics against the people. We expect to complete the lawsuit very soon and complete the work of that indoor playground in the same place or in a nearby area.

Similarly, tourism contributes greatly to the economy. Jaffna district has a very beautiful coastline. There are many areas that can attract people. However, there is still no strong tourism industry.

We expect to address the shortcomings at the Palali airport and renovate it. We are going to start the work on the Kankesanthurai port very soon. The Indian government has agreed to provide $ 60 million in assistance. We expect to start a very progressive tourism industry in Jaffna district. A plan has been drawn up for that.

The youth need better jobs. A better economy is necessary. It is the responsibility of the government to provide economic opportunities to the people. We will take action to fulfill our responsibility. I believe that for the first time in their lives, the parents and brothers and sisters here will be attending a meeting where the President, ministers and cabinet secretaries will participate.

We must put aside doubt and distrust. Our generation fought a war. Our generation clashed. We must create a conflict-free country for our children's generation, a country where there is no war and a country where we live in unity. For that, we must all unite.

These parents and brothers and sisters took a courageous step. You have trusted and joined us, even though you have not seen us in person, and you have not heard us. You have contributed to our formation of government. You have placed your trust in us. We will be a government that will increase love, closeness and development leaders so that you will not violate the trust you have placed in us in any way and that you will gain more trust. Just as you will not leave us, we will not leave you. We will build this country together. For that, I call on everyone to work together with brotherhood and purpose.

Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Sushil Ranasinghe,

Under the National Housing Project, assistance is being provided to the people displaced by the war in the North and East today to construct houses. Two housing projects are underway in the country. These include the housing project for those who lost their homes in the recent cyclone disaster and the National Housing Project that will be launched today.

This National Housing Project is being implemented under five ministries. It is expected to construct 31,218 houses through this. This includes a plan to construct 2,500 houses for the people of the North and East who were displaced and lost their homes due to the war. For this, Rs. 5,000 million has been allocated at the rate of Rs. 2 million per house.

Jaffna District Member of Parliament K. Ilangumaran

About nineteen thousand families displaced by the war live in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Of these, the government plans to provide houses to 2,500 people this year.

Previously, the amount received for housing projects was not sufficient to construct houses. Therefore, the President has increased the assistance amount from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 1.5 million and then to Rs. 2 million. This has created an environment where people can build houses with water and electricity facilities.

Not only housing projects, but many development projects are being implemented to make the dreams of the people living in these areas come true. The President believes that an environment should be created where people can easily access government services and where government employees can easily serve. Year after year, the trust of the people of the North in the National People's Power Government is being strengthened, and I hope that it will become an even stronger bond.

Secretary to the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply L.P. Kumudulal welcomed everyone to the event and expressed his views.

Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekhar, Deputy Minister of Housing D.P. Sarath, Governor of the Northern Province Nagalingam Vedhanayakam, Jaffna District Parliamentarians Jayachandramoorthy Rajeevan, Shanmuganathan Pawanandaraja, Sivagnanam Sridharan, G.G. Ponnambalam, Chief Secretary of the Northern Provincial Council Dhanuja Murugesan, government officials and residents of the area participated in the event.
