The National Building Research Organisation has issued landslide early warnings for multiple areas across Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts, with some zones placed under higher alert levels due to cumulative rainfall.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has activated landslide early warnings covering several districts in Sri Lanka's central highlands, effective from August 7 through August 8. The alerts were issued in coordination with the Disaster Management Centre and are based on cumulative rainfall data and meteorological forecasts provided by the Department of Meteorology.
The warning system employs two alert levels across the affected areas. In Kandy District, Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat has been placed under Level 2 (Amber) warning, indicating higher risk, while seven other divisions including Doluwa, Panvila and Medadumbara remain under Level 1 (Yellow) alert. However, sources differ on the alert levels assigned to other districts. According to one report, Kegalle District divisions are under Level 1 warnings, while another source indicates Level 2 warnings have been issued for Dehiowita, Bulathkohupitiya, Yatiyanthota, Deraniyagala and Aranayake divisions in the same district.
In Nuwara Eliya District, the higher Level 2 alert applies to Thalawakelle, Kotmale West, Ambagamuwa, Nuwara Eliya, Norwood and Kotmale East divisions. Ratnapura District has been placed under Level 1 warnings for Ratnapura, Openayake and Imbulpe divisions. Authorities have advised residents in mountainous areas, near man-made cut slopes and in previously identified landslide-prone zones to remain vigilant during the warning period.
