Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara informed Parliament on Wednesday that the investigation committee's report into the deadly clash at Negombo Prison has been presented to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The incident on July 5 resulted in 22 inmate deaths and 10 prison officer fatalities, with an additional 106 inmates and 21 officers sustaining injuries.
In response to the violence, the government has already distributed compensation to families of prison officers who died in the clash. Beyond these immediate payments, President Dissanayake has appointed a separate committee tasked with identifying additional relief and welfare options outside the scope of standard public administration provisions.
The newly formed committee will examine several matters affecting the bereaved families and injured personnel. According to the Minister, the committee's recommendations will cover compensation levels, pension entitlements, and the handling of outstanding loans incurred by the deceased officers. The committee will additionally evaluate the physical condition of injured prison staff, including assessments of permanent disabilities, and propose suitable support mechanisms based on their findings.
