COLOMBO (News 1st): Fresh unrest has erupted at the Negombo Prison, prompting authorities to deploy special police teams and personnel from the Police Special Task Force (STF) to strengthen security around the prison premises.Police said the additional deployment was made to ensure security outside the prison amid heightened tensions following a violent confrontation between two groups of inmates.In the aftermath of the clash, three inmates have been transferred to the Pallansena Prison Camp as authorities move to contain the situation and prevent further violence.According to the Department of Prisons, the confrontation resulted in the deaths of two inmates, while a further 38 inmates sustained injuries.The injured inmates are currently receiving treatment at the Negombo Hospital. Prison authorities said 10 of the injured inmates have undergone surgical procedures due to the severity of their injuries.A senior official at the Negombo Hospital stated that two inmates who were in critical condition were subsequently transferred to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo for further specialized treatment.Meanwhile, four inmates engaged in a protest within the prison premises were also injured when the roof of a prison building collapsed.Prisons Commissioner and Media Spokesman A.C. Gajanayake stated that a special investigation team has been appointed on the instructions of the Commissioner General of Prisons to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the clash between the two inmate groups.Police have also launched a separate investigation into the incident.Meanwhile, Minister of Justice Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, said that a report on the incident that occurred yesterday between the two inmate groups at the Negombo Prison has been called for today.A magisterial inquiry into the incident was conducted last night as investigations continued into the circumstances surrounding the violence.Preliminary findings from investigations have revealed that the clash is believed to have erupted between a group allegedly supporting drug trafficking activities within the prison and another group opposing such activities.Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full sequence of events that led to the deadly confrontation, while security remains heightened at the Negombo Prison following the latest unrest.
