A temporary barrier lake that emerged in Gyirong on Saturday evening has substantially cleared through natural drainage, according to Chinese state media reports. However, authorities caution that the region faces additional challenges from continuous rainfall expected through Tuesday.
The cleared lake bed has left behind extensive silt deposits exceeding one meter in depth across the most severely affected areas. These thick accumulations of sediment present significant obstacles to rescue efforts, as they create conditions where people can become trapped, according to reports from Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
Search and rescue operations remain active at the border crossing site. A substantial deployment of 117 firefighters and 13 rescue dogs has been mobilized to assist with ongoing search efforts. Two rounds of comprehensive searches have been completed to date, with teams continuing their work despite the challenging conditions created by the silt coverage and anticipated weather patterns.
