Newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Wei Huaxiang met with JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva at the party's Pelawatte headquarters following the Ambassador's arrival in the country. According to Ada Derana, Ambassador Wei presented his credentials on August 25 and expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received from Sri Lankan citizens since taking up his posting.
The meeting centred on deepening bilateral relations between the two countries. Both sides discussed how Sri Lanka could benefit from China's extensive experience in poverty alleviation efforts. Ambassador Wei indicated that Chinese investors would be encouraged to expand their investment presence in Sri Lanka. He also emphasized that China conducts its international engagement while respecting national sovereignty and pursuing mutual development, according to Ada Derana's reporting.
Key topics included the government's anti-corruption initiatives and the "Praja Shakthi" programme, which targets rural poverty reduction. The two sides acknowledged the significance of upcoming anniversaries in the bilateral relationship: 2027 will mark 70 years of diplomatic relations between the nations, while 2027 will also see the 75th anniversary of the historic Rubber-Rice Pact signed in 1952.
Ambassador Wei shared personal insights into China's development trajectory, noting how the country's progress under Communist Party leadership had enabled individuals from rural backgrounds to access opportunities and serve in diplomatic roles. Both parties agreed to continue strengthening their countries' friendship and bilateral cooperation moving forward.
