China's newly appointed Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Wei Huaxiang, arrived in Colombo on August 11 to begin his tenure, committing to expand the countries' historical partnership. In remarks delivered upon arrival, Wei described his appointment by Chinese President Xi Jinping as an honor and outlined plans to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors. He expressed admiration for Sri Lanka's cultural heritage and people while emphasizing Beijing's view of the island nation as a priority within its regional diplomacy strategy.
Weixin referenced the extensive historical connections between the two nations, spanning centuries of maritime exchanges through the ancient Silk Road, the mid-20th century Rubber-Rice Pact, and recent cooperation frameworks including China's Belt and Broad Initiative. He highlighted specific collaborative projects that have benefited both populations, including the China-Sri Lanka Joint Research and Demonstration Centre for Water Technology and China's supply of school uniform materials to Sri Lankan schools. High-level diplomatic engagements in 2025, when President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya visited China, have provided new strategic direction for the bilateral relationship, Wei noted.
Looking ahead, the Ambassador indicated that 2027 holds particular significance for the partnership, as it will mark both the 70th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations and the 75th anniversary of the Rubber-Rice Pact signing. Wei committed to fostering closer communication with various sectors across both countries while working to safeguard the interests of Chinese institutions and citizens operating in Sri Lanka. He emphasized that China stands ready to align development strategies with Sri Lanka and expand cooperation in support of the nation's economic development and improved living standards for its citizens.
