A water purification facility has been opened in the Thirappane Divisional Secretariat area to serve approximately 1,300 families struggling to access safe drinking water.
A water purification facility was inaugurated in the Thirappane Divisional Secretariat area on Tuesday to address critical water access challenges faced by roughly 1,300 families in the region. The facility was opened under the leadership of Sri Lanka Army Commander Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne, marking his first community welfare initiative since taking office.
The project was funded through a Rs. 2.65 million contribution from a Sri Lankan expatriate residing in the United States, who channeled support through a personal connection with the newly appointed Army Commander. Construction of the facility commenced approximately three months prior, with Army personnel involved in the implementation process.
The initiative addresses longstanding difficulties experienced by Thirappane residents in obtaining access to clean drinking water. According to reports, the project was coordinated during Lieutenant General Premaratne's previous role as Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, before his recent appointment to the top military position.
