Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis following a positive test for cocaine during the Mallorca Open in June.
Nick Kyrgios, the former world number 13, has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after providing a sample containing benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, during the Mallorca Open on 22 June. The International Tennis Integrity Agency implemented the suspension on 4 August, according to Ada Derana reporting.
Under the terms of the suspension, the 31-year-old Australian is barred from competing in Grand Slam tournaments and all sanctioned events across the men's and women's professional tennis tours. He is also prohibited from coaching or attending these competitions. The integrity agency noted that Kyrgios retains the right to appeal the suspension, though he has not yet exercised this option.
Kyrgios acknowledged the incident through an Instagram post, describing his actions as "a huge mistake" and stating that he accepts full responsibility. The suspension comes at a time when Kyrgios has had limited competitive activity, having played only four singles matches during the current season. His recent involvement in professional tennis has been constrained by ongoing knee and wrist injuries. His last recorded appearance was in men's doubles at Wimbledon alongside partner Alexander Bublik, where they exited in the opening round.
