Sri Lanka's Energy Minister has dismissed concerns over potential power disruptions due to coal shortages, while highlighting planned renewable energy expansion.
Sri Lanka's Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy, Anura Karunathilaka, has assured the public that power cuts stemming from coal supply constraints will not occur in the future. The Minister's statement appears directed at countering claims circulated by opposition figures warning of potential electricity disruptions linked to coal availability.
Addressing public concerns, Minister Karunathilaka emphasized that there is no need for alarm regarding such scenarios. His assurances come at a time when energy security remains a topic of political discussion within the country.
The Minister also highlighted the government's plans to bolster renewable energy generation, noting that approximately 400 megawatts of wind-generated electricity is expected to be integrated into the national power grid over the coming year. This addition aims to strengthen Sri Lanka's overall energy capacity and reduce dependence on conventional fuel sources.
