The government has distributed Rs. 22.7 million in subsidies and 3,000 coconut saplings to 515 growers in Mullaitivu District as part of its Northern Coconut Triangle development programme.

A total of 515 coconut growers in Mullaitivu District have received financial assistance and planting materials under the government's Northern Coconut Triangle initiative. The Rs. 22.7 million in subsidies were handed out on August 8th in Mulliyawala, distributed through the Coconut Cultivation Board's "Kapturu Sawiya" transformational programme, which operates under the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure.

The assistance took two forms, with the majority of recipients benefiting from irrigation development support. Of the growers assisted, 443 received subsidy cheques specifically allocated for establishing irrigation systems on their coconut lands. A further 72 growers qualified for assistance under a separate coconut land rehabilitation subsidy scheme. Additionally, approximately 3,000 coconut saplings were distributed to participating farmers to support expansion of coconut cultivation across the region.

The Northern Coconut Triangle programme spans all five districts of the Northern Province—Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya—forming a geographical triangle connecting Point Pedro, Silavathurai and Kokkilai. Since its launch last year, the initiative has aimed to expand coconut cultivation, revive abandoned agricultural land, improve farmer incomes and strengthen the sector's role in Sri Lanka's export economy. The programme aligns with a national objective to increase annual coconut production to 4.2 billion nuts and raise coconut export earnings to US$1.5 billion by 2030.
