The Norton area in Nuwara Eliya district experienced the highest rainfall across the country over a 24-hour period, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The Norton region in Nuwara Eliya recorded 258.6 millimetres of rainfall during a 24-hour measurement period ending this morning, marking the highest precipitation reported nationally during that timeframe, the Department of Meteorology confirmed.
The measurements were taken between 8:30 a.m. on March 3rd and 8:30 a.m. on March 4th. Several other locations in the central highlands also experienced significant rainfall during the same period. Canyon recorded 234.6 mm, while Laxapana received 208 mm of rainfall. Castlereagh, another highland station, reported 164 mm.
Other areas monitored by the Department showed lower but still substantial precipitation levels. Maussakele received 125 mm, Upper Kotmale recorded 110.3 mm, and Kotmale reported 105 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period. The concentration of heavy rainfall across multiple central highland locations suggests the region experienced a significant weather system during the measurement period.
