Global crude oil benchmarks have climbed substantially as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East threaten to further restrict energy supplies from the region.

Crude oil prices reached their highest levels since late July on Thursday, driven by escalating concerns about supply disruptions stemming from ongoing Middle East tensions. Brent crude futures for October delivery increased by $2.44 per barrel, or 2.7%, to reach $94.06, while the more actively traded October West Texas Intermediate contract rose $2.41, or 2.9%, to $86.80. Both major benchmarks extended their gains to a fifth consecutive trading session.

Analysts attribute the price movement to deepening uncertainty about regional stability and its impact on energy supplies. A UBS analyst noted that elevated tensions create room for additional supply disruptions, with reduced Middle Eastern exports further tightening global oil markets. The United Arab Emirates' decision to suspend all financial and economic transactions with Iran has intensified focus on deteriorating relations between major Gulf producers and Iran. According to a Nissan Securities strategist, while sporadic regional attacks have supported prices, the market lacks significant momentum without major escalation, though ongoing uncertainty surrounding peace efforts and interstate tensions suggests prices may continue climbing gradually.

The conflict's impact on critical shipping routes remains significant. Prior to military operations that began on February 28, approximately one-fifth of global oil consumption flowed through the Strait of Hormuz. Current traffic levels remain substantially below pre-war volumes. Disagreement exists regarding waterway access, with U.S. President Trump stating the strait remains open while Iran claims it is closed. Shipping data from Wednesday showed no change from the previous day.

Refined fuel supplies have also tightened, with U.S. distillate stockpiles declining for a third consecutive week, though crude inventories unexpectedly rose by 4.4 million barrels.
