Global crude markets fell over 1% on Tuesday following signals of possible negotiations between the United States and Iran, offering relief from tensions that had pressured energy prices upward.
Oil prices retreated on Tuesday as investors assessed the implications of a reported pause in U.S. military operations against Iran. Brent crude futures declined by $0.54 to $87.82 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude dropped to $81.95 a barrel, each registering losses of roughly 0.6 to 0.8 percent. Both benchmarks touched their lowest levels in over a week during the session.
The price movement reflects cautious optimism regarding potential diplomatic resolution. U.S. President Donald Trump indicated on Monday that negotiations with Iran were progressing positively, though he warned that military action would resume if talks stalled. Iran responded with similarly conditional statements about potential retaliation. Market analysts attributed the price decline to easing geopolitical tensions and reduced concerns about Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure. However, observers cautioned that the situation remains unpredictable and subject to rapid shifts.
Shipping disruptions continue to affect market dynamics despite the diplomatic signals. Barclays analysts reported that flows through critical maritime passages remained constrained, with crude and refined product exports through the Strait of Hormuz averaging 2.9 million barrels daily in the week ending July 24, compared to 5.9 million barrels the previous week. According to Marex analysis, while Houthi fighters based in Yemen have aimed to restrict shipping at Bab el-Mandeb, questions remain about their capacity to enforce a comprehensive blockade independently.
Demand factors also influenced the price movement, with analysts noting significant demand destruction particularly across Asian markets as a counterweight to supply concerns. Meanwhile, preliminary polling data suggested U.S. crude oil and gasoline stockpiles likely declined last week, while distillate inventories probably increased.
