A vehicle collided with an intercity passenger train at a level crossing in Kilinochchi on Thursday morning, resulting in one fatality and injuring another person.

A fatal collision between a car and a moving train occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. today at a level crossing in the Araviyan Nagar area of Kilinochchi. The intercity train was operating on the Colombo Fort to Kankesanthurai route when the accident happened. One person was killed in the incident, while another sustained injuries.

The Railway Department confirmed that the level crossing was equipped with functional warning signal lights at the time of the collision. The train sustained damage in the impact and was subsequently halted at Kilinochchi railway station as a precautionary measure. The circumstances that led the vehicle to cross the railway line despite the operational warning signals remain unclear from initial reports.
