Omalpe Sobitha Thero has stirred up controversy today by holding a media conference with the views of a sermon delivered by a maulavi of the Tummalasuriya, Yakamwela Muslim Mosque in the Kurunegala district, saying that religious terrorism is once again on the rise. The views he made at the conference were aimed at stopping the wave of terrorism that is currently emerging under the guise of religion. We have been affected by terrorism on a large scale, that is enough. We cannot allow terrorism to spread under the guise of religion any longer. Is this the civilized human society that is expected through religions? This incident took place this month (12.06.2026). In the maulavi’s speech regarding the maulavi’s sermon, “If anyone opposes or acts against our religious rituals, he should be killed. If any organization or group acts against our religious rituals, they should be killed.” We are not discussing a religious issue on this occasion. We do not have any conflict or debate over religious rituals or traditions. We are only opposed to creating public opinion against terrorist acts hidden in the background of religion. This is against the Sri Lankan Penal Code. Similarly, it is against international agreements. It is against the very existence of a civilized society. Therefore, while we act within the law and legally, it is essential to create awareness among the people about this. We request the media to clarify the facts regarding this to the people. This is not an issue about religions. This is an issue about law, morality and humanity. Therefore, we believe that the media will fulfill this duty.
