According to Premadasa, the unrest has resulted in fatalities at multiple locations. He reported that one death occurred at Magazine Prison the previous night, while two additional deaths were recorded at Kuruwita Prison on Friday morning. Beyond these incidents, disturbances have also been documented at Pallansena Prison, suggesting the unrest extends across the prison system.
The opposition leader framed the parliamentary statement as essential for transparency and accountability, emphasizing that lawmakers should receive formal updates on the matter through the minister responsible for prison operations. The call for a special statement indicates opposition concern about the scale and severity of the incidents occurring within correctional facilities.
