Sri Lanka Police inspected over 26,000 individuals across the country during special operations, resulting in 527 arrests including those suspected of criminal activity, driving under the influence, and traffic violations.
Sri Lanka Police carried out coordinated operations across the island on Wednesday, conducting inspections of 26,882 individuals as part of efforts to address various criminal activities and traffic violations. The operations resulted in the arrest of 527 suspects across multiple categories of alleged offences.
Among those taken into custody, 26 individuals were arrested on suspicion of direct involvement in criminal offences, while authorities also apprehended 126 persons who were wanted on outstanding warrants. The police said that these arrests targeted individuals with existing legal obligations to appear before the courts.
Traffic-related arrests comprised a significant portion of the day's operations. Police arrested 50 individuals suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and took 101 people into custody for reckless driving. Beyond the arrests, authorities initiated legal action against 4,316 individuals for various traffic violations, demonstrating a broader focus on road safety enforcement during the operations.
