The National Disaster Relief Services Centre reports that drought conditions have impacted more than 68,000 people across four districts, with authorities organizing water distribution and relief programmes.
Persistent dry weather has affected approximately 68,041 individuals spread across 21,873 families in Sri Lanka, according to the National Disaster Relief Services Centre. The impact is concentrated in 17 Grama Niladhari divisions located in the districts of Batticaloa, Ampara, Moneragala, and Ratnapura.
Water scarcity has emerged as a critical concern for affected communities. The Centre's Senior Assistant Secretary, Prageeth Danansooriya, reported that immediate interventions have been mobilized to address shortages, with drinking water provision reaching 12,291 individuals from 3,495 families who currently lack adequate access.
In response to the crisis, relief efforts have been coordinated between the disaster management authority and local government bodies. These assistance programmes aim to provide essential support to the drought-stricken communities and help mitigate the immediate hardship caused by the dry conditions.
