Dry weather conditions have affected 84,545 people spread across seven districts in Sri Lanka, according to the Disaster Management Centre. Monaragala district has experienced the most severe impact, with 11,074 residents affected, followed by Batticaloa district at 9,547 people and Ampara district at 2,823 people. The remaining affected areas are distributed across Badulla, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, and Ratnapura districts, where water shortages have been reported in multiple Divisional Secretariat divisions.
In response to the crisis, authorities have initiated a relief effort targeting 75,734 people with the distribution of drinking water supplies. The Disaster Management Centre continues to monitor the situation and coordinate assistance measures across the affected regions.
The Department of Meteorology has warned of elevated heat index levels, particularly in the Eastern Province and specific districts including Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, and Monaragala. The heat index measures the temperature as experienced by the human body and has reached levels warranting public attention. Health authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious and adhere to recommended health guidelines to mitigate risks associated with extreme heat exposure.
