This delay is being deliberately caused to appoint the children of two provincial governors as judges. The government also intends to extend the term of the Chief Justice. Former President Maithripala Sirisena appointed the current Justice Birthi Padman Surasena as a High Court judge. Birthi Padman Surasena ruled that the decision taken by the then President Maithripala Sirisena during the political crisis in 2018 was wrong.
