The Paddy Marketing Board has secured around 15,000 metric tons of paddy so far this Yala season, according to a statement from the organization's leadership. The procurement initiative reflects efforts to support local rice farmers and stabilize supplies during the harvest period.
To facilitate these purchases, the Board has established 90 paddy purchasing centers distributed across multiple districts island-wide. According to Board Chairman Manjula Pinnalanda, the locations have been strategically positioned to maximize farmer access. The concentration of stores varies by region, with Ampara hosting the largest number at 28 centers, followed by Anuradhapura with 18 centers. Other regions include Monaragala with 10 centers, 10 combined centers in Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi, and 6 centers in Polonnaruwa.
The widespread distribution of purchasing points suggests a comprehensive approach to collection from farming communities across different parts of the country during the critical harvest season.
