Scottish police are investigating reports of several foreign athletes, including boxers from Uganda and Pakistan, who failed to return home following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Police Scotland has launched an investigation into reports of missing athletes following the Commonwealth Games, which concluded in Glasgow last Sunday. According to a police spokesperson, several competitors remain unaccounted for, with initial engagement underway with the United Kingdom's Home Office to assess the circumstances.
Uganda's NBS Sport reported that four members of the country's six-person boxing contingent have gone missing ahead of the scheduled team departure on Tuesday. One of the missing athletes reportedly indicated to the broadcaster an intention to seek asylum. Separately, Pakistan Today reported that one Pakistani boxer also failed to appear for a scheduled flight home on the same day.
The disappearances are part of a broader pattern observed at recent Commonwealth Games hosted in English-speaking nations. Following the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, authorities were still searching for approximately 50 athletes and officials more than a month after the event concluded, while around 190 others had applied for asylum during that period.
The Glasgow Games drew roughly 3,000 athletes representing 74 nations across 11 days of competition. Missing athlete incidents have been documented at multiple Commonwealth Games editions hosted in Australia and Britain since the Glasgow 2014 Games, highlighting ongoing challenges related to athlete welfare and immigration procedures surrounding the major sporting event.
