Pakistan's High Commission in Colombo held a ceremony to commemorate the nation's 79th Independence Day, with the High Commissioner highlighting bilateral progress and reaffirming commitment to strengthening relations with Sri Lanka.
The High Commission of Pakistan and its community in Sri Lanka held a ceremony yesterday to mark the country's 79th Independence Day. The event, presided over by Pakistan High Commissioner Major General (Retd.) Dr. Nayyar Naseer, featured the hoisting of the national flag and recitation of the national anthem, alongside special messages from Pakistan's President and Prime Minister.
In his address, Dr. Naseer reflected on Pakistan's eight decades of development across economic, sporting, defence and technology sectors, paying tribute to the nation's founding figures. He reiterated Pakistan's commitment to peaceful coexistence and resolving regional disputes, including the Jammu and Kashmir issue, through dialogue. The High Commissioner also reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to protecting its national sovereignty and water resources.
A significant portion of the address focused on deepening bilateral relations with Sri Lanka. Dr. Naseer expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka's sustained goodwill towards Pakistan and highlighted institutional progress achieved under the recently implemented Sri Lanka-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement. He noted growing commercial momentum, particularly through industrial partnerships involving Punjab and Karachi-based business hubs, and technology exchanges in the gems and jewellery sector.
The High Commissioner pointed to efforts to facilitate Sri Lankan agricultural exports to Pakistan, specifically tea, pineapple and avocado, while highlighting increased Pakistani investment in Sri Lanka's pharmaceutical industry. He also referenced ongoing cultural and educational initiatives, including the promotion of Gandhara Buddhist tourism. An upcoming Sri Lanka-Pakistan Business Forum with the Export Development Board was identified as a further step to advance commercial engagement.
Dr. Naseer characterized the Pakistan-Sri Lanka relationship as "time-tested, long-lasting and unconditional." The ceremony concluded with attendance from Sri Lankan government officials, diplomats, business leaders and media representatives.
